Go-To Music For Writing

Hi all,

Hope you are all doing well on this wonderful Monday and it’s finally May! Where has the year gone? I completely lost April somewhere. It was Easter and then, boom!

So, one of my fellow AuthorTubers did a great video about her go-to writing songs. I will link her video here so you can check it out. But, it got me thinking about the music I have on my Spotify lists to help me write. I don’t have specific songs. More artists and genres that help me get motivated, and specific playlists that were not created by me.

  • For Focused Writing- Focused writing is usually my morning journaling, blogs, video scripts, working on my planner. I usually like to listen to instrumental music for this to help minimize distraction. Spotify has a ton of Focus playlists with instrumental music designed to help concentration. I like this in the morning (if I get up early enough) so I can keep an ear on the baby monitor for when Baby Girl wakes up. Once the focused writing is done, I can move on to my WIP.
  • Rap Battles- I love rap battles! Epic Rap Battles of History and Whitney Avalon with her Princess Battles are my top 2. I usually use these in character playlists or when I’m cleaning my office and want to jam out to make the process a bit more fun.
  • Weird Al- I have enjoyed Weird Al’s music since I was a kid and got one of his greatest hits on cassette! Yeah, I’m that old. His music also goes into character specific playlists and my cleaning the office music. I think I know his parodies better than I know some of the originals.
  • Fantasy Themed- I discovered several artists on YouTube and then found their profiles on Spotify. (If you want a list, let me know and I’ll edit this post and add them on.) It’s all instrumental and great for getting in the right mood for a scene. I’ll play a sad song or a song meant for a battle or something themed for spell casting. I’m in the middle of tweaking some mood playlists with these artists.
  • Country- I love country! If it fits a character, the song goes into the playlist. I usually have to listen to these when I’m not working on something. If I’m driving and trying to get into the mood for when I get home.
  • 90s Boy Bands- I’m an 80s baby but a child of the 90s. So, the boy bands are a staple in my music! I will find a way to listen to it with any of my work.
  • Movie/Broadway Soundtracks- These fit mood music or characters. And, they’re just so much fun! I jumped on the Hamilton bandwagon in the fall so a few songs from that are scattered around my playlists.

So, those are my default music I have to listen to at some point when I’m working. What kind of music do you listen to? Or, do you prefer other background noise or silence?
