Show Review: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Part 1

I know, I’m behind the times on this one. But, I finally have been taking time in the morning before Little Bits wakes up to catch at least part of an episode. I love anything with witches and I’m hoping it would boost my inspiration a bit.

First obvious observation: It is not like the light-hearted, fun Sabrina I watched in the 90s. Which is why I’m watching it before Baby gets up. Bit too scary for an 11 month old.

I haven’t figured out how I feel for this series yet. I know I’m late to the game in watching it. The overt association of witchcraft and devil worship makes my stomach twist because I know that is not the case. Maybe they’ll change it in the other two parts? Don’t spoil it for me if you know what happens.

I do love the club Sabrina and her friends form to protect each other against the bullies on the football team.

My brief opinion on some of the characters:

  • Sabrina: She’s fun and interesting. Her conflict between the choice she has to make is huge. Following her family or looking after her friends and finding love.
  • Aunt Hilda: I feel bad for Aunt Hilda. She’s so sweet and means well but she’s always getting picked on.
  • Aunt Zelda: I don’t like her! She’s stuck up, snotty, manipulative. I do not like her!
  • Ambrose: Sabrina’s cousin. I want to know more about him. His backstory is still very much a mystery. He did something placing him under house arrest so it couldn’t have been good but he’s always trying to help Sabrina.
  • Ms. Wardwell: Well, first I need to gush about Michelle Gomez. She plays villains so well! I loved her as Missy on Doctor Who during Peter Capaldi’s run a couple years ago. The overall ambiance of the show makes her character all the more creepy.
  • Salem: A goblin in cat form who becomes Sabrina’s familiar. I like it. He kind or reminds me of Goose in Captain Marvel. Appearing to be a sweet kitty cat, but he’s actually this hugely powerful creature.
  • The Sisters: Every mean girl clique in school except with magic powers. *shudder*

As I said, I haven’t made up my mind on how I feel about this show. I think I have to keep going before I’m able to decide. It’s more out of curiosity than enjoyment. I did get some ideas for my book series that I’m tossing around and tweaking.

That’s all I can think of for part 1. I’ll be starting part 2 soon. Slowly making my way through. My one complaint, apart from what I mentioned linking witchcraft and devil worship, is the lighting in some of the shots are insanely dark! You can’t see what’s going on sometimes. And, I watch it early morning with no lights on in the living room. It’s great when the villains are on the screen. Makes them extra creepy. But, if Sabrina and Harvey are walking in the woods talking, there are times when you can hardly see them. Makes Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince seem bright and cheerful.

Let me know if you’re watching this show. I’m definitely curious to see the next 2 parts, and beyond if it happens.
