Yes, being an author is a business

Hello everyone,

A new month has begun. I shared my new goals for the month on my Patreon if you’re interested. All my links are at the bottom of the post. I can’t believe it’s February. I’ve got so much planned for the month. It’s going to be fun.

Let’s get into the topic!

I don’t know why this is such a divisive topic. So many writers get really upset when you talk about the business end. Like it diminishes the art. One of my favorite authortubers, Jenna Moreci, has some of the best videos on the business side of being an author and they’re among her least viewed. But, she continues to make them because it’s an important topic that isn’t covered enough. I’ll link here to her playlist. It’s phenomenal.

I’m going to be talking about being Indie since that’s what I plan on doing. But, you should still know about business and money management if you’re going traditional because you’ll have to pay for marketing.

As with any business, you should know about money management. Budgeting for the costs involved in publishing and marketing a book. The things that you cannot skimp on if you want successful sales are professional edit, formatting, and cover. If you are producing a product and expecting people to pay for it, it better be top quality. It’s why people still frown on indie authors. Because there are so many bad books out there! Creates a bad image for those of us who put real effort into our work.

It’s going to take time to build your business. No one is an overnight sensation. Even Stephen King was rejected 30 times with his first book. Most writers have day jobs to cover the bills and make sure they have health insurance. It is possible to succeed. You probably won’t make 6 figures but you can make a decent amount if you work at it. Study the industry. Test out different marketing tactics. Engage with other authors on Facebook groups and conferences to exchange tips. Never stop learning. The publishing industry is always changing. What works for one person may not work for you. And it’ll help you be aware of scammers.

If you don’t want to make money from your writing, that’s totally fine. You can post on Wattpad or FanFiction.net as a hobby and that’s perfectly fine. But, if you want to make writing a career, you should study the industry and learn about money management.

I’ll once again direct you to Jenna’s videos. She’s always coming out with something new. I also encourage you to look up the Career Author Podcast. They’re on YouTube as well as iTunes.

Have a good week.
