My Process for Starting a New Book

All through the month of March, I’ve been prepping a new book. It’s the 3rd in my series, yet to be titled. I’ve actually been battling it for almost 2 years now due to block thanks to things in my life but I’m finally making progress.

For most of the month, I’ve been outlining on index cards. A bullet point or two per card and then filling in as much detail as I can to flesh out the scene or description or whatever. Once all the info is on cards, they’ll be divided into chapters and I can start typing up the outline. I’ll do a pass through, fill in details, make notes, and then I can start writing.

My goal was to participate in Camp NaNoWriMo. I’ll still do that but I’ll include my outline toward my word count.

Fast drafting has usually been my best method to get a first draft done. It usually means a crap-ton of editing later but it’s resembles a little bit the story I want to tell. Even if a percentage is “This happens but I don’t know details yet” in brackets. Or something to that effect.

I might keep up the index cards for the next book as well. Being able to rearrange and add has been extremely helpful. Index cards are also super cheap.

Don’t forget my NICU Drive is still going on until May 4th. We’ve been collecting a ton of items. I know they will be greatly appreciated.
