Advice For Writers Who Just Want to Make Fast Cash

When listening to podcasts and writing videos, one topic that comes up is the belief that writers can get rich fast. There are YouTube videos and books and courses all about “Get rich with your book!” “Become an instant best seller without doing any work!”

Well, if you do want to be a writer and have that get rich mindset, I have a bit of advice for you and some people may not like it. You may want to rethink your career path. Here’s a reality check. Unless you resort to some shady methods, making tons of money with minimal work as an author is not possible. Writing a book and maintaining a career as an author takes a ton of work. You can’t just upload your first draft and expect the cash to roll in. I mean, no one is stopping you from uploading your first draft but the only thing you will have a ton of will be 1 star reviews. Readers are smart and we all want quality entertainment.

I have been working on my series for going on 6 years now. Multiple drafts on, so far, 2 books, rounds with critique partners and beta readers, countless scrapped ideas, and I’m not done. There’s still the professional edit and getting a good cover, not to mention the whole business side of being an author.

There is no fast way to make money. This may sound harsh but it’s reality. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is fooling themselves and you or they’re scammers. Maybe both.

I’m not saying this to deter anyone. If you love writing and have a story to tell, go for it. The hard work is worth it. Just don’t quit your job and buy a Tesla just yet.
